Should Lone Star Card be used for purchases outside Texas? Uncle Sam says it's okay.
Tyler — New numbers show millions of dollars of Lone Star Card purchases in vacation destinations, like Hawaii, Florida, New York, California.
Should Texans on the taxpayer dole be allowed to spend that money in other states?
East Texans offer their suggestions to our news partner: KTBB and host Garth Maier.

If we are going to dole out the money, at least allow them to spend it however and wherever they want. If you try to regulate it like this you just open the doors for something worse. "So you want to go on vacation and you need $100 cash but you're broke? I'll give you the cash if you'll let me buy $150 worth of groceries on your card." How are we going to regulate that? We don't want big government intruding in our personal affairs, why should we insist on it for those less fortunate?
Hate to tell you Kman, but many of the people who work in this state have or qualify for the lone star card. So, that person you saw may have been just as much a hard working citizen as you or harder working citizen than you that is being under paid. Many of your employees who work for this State qualify for the Lone Star Card.
Lets just say you work for a company in Texas, chances are you only earn the minimum wage because 54.3% of all jobs in Texas are minimum wage or less jobs. If you are one of these people and are lucky enough to get 40 hours per week, that is only $1,600.00 per month before taxes. In Texas if you earn less than $1,838.00 per month you are in poverty and qualify for the Lone Star Card......WOW.
While waiting in line at the grocery with my wife, I see the Lone Star food stamp card used mostly for buying the high dollar cuts of meat that people who actually WORK for a living can't afford to buy on the family budget, and then, in the parking lot, I often see these "groceries" put into Cadillacs, Lincolns, BMWs, etc. And I think...there goes my hard earned tax dollars. I saw the same thing, years ago, when I worked in a grocery store as a sacker.
Keep in mind while you read Don's comments that he is of the school that says the poor don't lie, they don't defraud, they don't steal. and if they are caught red handed doing any of these things, remember they are the true victims and not the victimizer. That the only true victimizer is the persons the poor lie to, defraud or steal from. He'll never admit that some recipients under report their income, lie about their marital status, lie about anything that keeps them from getting aid.
Sure there are people who lie to obtain these benefits just like people & corporations lie on their taxes to keep from paying their fair share & to hear them tell it they are the true victims & not the victimizer.
That the only true victimizer are the persons & tax cheats who lie to, defraud or steal from (all honest taxpayers). JP will never admit that some wealthy and businesses under report their income, lie about their profits an status, lie about anything that keeps them from paying.
I think all welfare should be drug nicotene tested before receiving any benefits.
