Are Republicans more generous?

A new study out on Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy reveals, red states, or those with a republican, conservative base, are more generous to charities, than blue states that generally support President Obama.

KTBB's Garth Maier asks: Why do you think Republicans give more to charity than Democrats?

I think it's funny to read the posts from the left, their denial, their outrage, their scrambling for excuses. The left is not neccesarily less generous. They just think, per don's post, that it should be done though gov't. But gov't is far less efficient, a much greater % admin costs, reaching fewer people and has much less oversight. Non-profits answer to at least the IRS and must guard against fraud and others to protect their non-profit standing.

Wrong again Jp, if an individual want to give from their earnings to others that is all well and good but nobody should edxpect tax dollars to be handed over to a private charity without some kind of oversight. Yes Jp the left is not neccesarily less generous. They just think, per don's post, that it should be done though gov't if it is TAX DOLLARS. But gov't is far MORE efficient, a much LESS % admin costs, because the Govt administrators are not paid millions and has much more oversight.

For every dollar gov't spends on welfare et.al. less than 20 cents make it to the recipients. United Way, Salvation Army, churches etc. more than 85 cents of every dollar makes it to the recipients. Granted these groups are aided by volunteers, including the evil rich. If it weren't for these charities many homeless would go hungry or have no where to sleep, or have any hope of getting off the streets. What gov't progams offer that?

Better check those figures on the Unitedway, almost 60% of the money they receive goes to advertisement and benefits for their employees. The CEO is paid millions each year

Just look at the military budget, and why has it grown to the amount it is today? According to the military and the CBO, 51% of their budget goes to private contractors and cost much more than it did when the military filled those jobs.

Just look at the private prisons across the nation costing more than what it did when the gov't was operating them with a higher quality staff and services with a lower turnover rate. In Tx prisons in the 1980's it cost taxpayers $7.50 per inmate now $47. in state operated facilities & $50. for private operated facilities and the private do not provide any medical or education to inmates.

The prisons in Texas use to produce everything that was needed to operate the prisons & enough produce and meat to feed even the state schools & orphanages. NOW ALL OF THOSE FUNCTIONS ARE CONTRACTED OUT TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR DRIVING COST TO THE TAX PAYERS THROUGH THR ROOF. Government workers can do a better job than the private sector and have always done it with less benefits and pay saving tax dollars.

This is a bunch of bilge water! For heaven's sake...look at what willard and ryan would do if they won in Nov. Start with the repub party's platform item to OWN every woman's uterus...continue on to requiring grandma to fork out thousands in their voucher system...defunding education assistance, deregulating everything, and, above all and before anything else, tax the middle class and give the uber-wealthy an even greater tax break. Are all teavangelical repubs brain dead? OBAMA 11/6/2012!

Another thing, the individuals on the left do not donate to take advantage of tax breaks like those on the right do, they donate to help other not for brownie point or to say look at what I did expecting praise like those on the right do. Kind of like praying in public so others will think you are a Christian but you do not actualy live as a Christian should.

Those on the left or Democrats are not necessarily less generous as individuals. The story states that the STATE ie...state governments controled by Democrats are less generous. That could mean that they do not believe in handing tax dollars over to charities, without oversight to ensure it is used in a fair manner and not to fill the pockets of those who administer the charities.

It's not a political motivation to contribute, but rather a religious or philanthropic motivation. It doesn't seem to be accurate to say that Republicans are more generous based on this study. Maybe they are, but I don't think this study would necessarily support that conclusion.

But hey, the female body can magically abort a legitimate rapist's child according to the science of the Republican party, so who cares about accuracy.

I said that I disagreed with the findings of the study, but really I disagree with the extrapolation made in this news bit. The study showed that the top 5 states with the most charitable giving leaned Republican. But I'm not sure it's exactly accurate to say that Republicans ergo are more generous. The study showed that it was religious ties that made the most impact on charitable giving, followed by diversity. Utah, with its strong Mormon population, was first. D.C. was second.

I think Rep. Akin's definition of "legitimate rape" and his "science" to back it up is hate speech.

Don't you think so, jpttm?

It wasn't directed specifically at Dems. So no. While it was a really stupid comment, it does't rise to the level of hate speech. A racist or sexist comment aimed at the left is hate speech, aimed at the right is free speech.

A statement that embarrasses the left and is backed by evidence. That fits the definition of hate speech. Doesn't it, tonks?

I don't. I disagree with the finding of the study.
