Bloomberg doesn't know what he's talking about. Just another rich guy with an opinion.
He's hardly an expert at education. Class size needs to be small. Teachers need to be paid well.
There are way too many administrators who are paid way too much. And Texas isn't like New Jersey, Michigan or California in terms of the way teachers are paid. You want to complain about someone being overpaid, start with administrators and not with classroom teachers. Bloomberg needs to meddle in something else
Better pay never caused any teachers to perform in an improved way. Look at the salaries in places like the North East. Connecticut, Carolina, NJ,NC,RI, and IL. Average teacher pay is between $50,000 and $60,000, with 3 months a year off, and better benefits than most public or private companies. Teachers are paid VERY WELL and should be required to TEACH WELL. Nothing else will change the sagging performances in our schools. Reading 15th, Math 25th, Problem solving 24th., IN THE WORLD.
Yet, times have changed from the 60s and 70's. Students need a higher level of educationthen we needed. When I graduated Algebra was an elective. To keep up, Algebra is a neccesity. Same with typing and other computer related fields. Students should really be multi lingual so to compete in our global markets. But we've put hackles on students and bound and gagged our teachers, then said now go and get and education.
When I was in school most classes had 30-32 students each and our education did not suffer. Then came the ACLU and other "civil rights" groups determined to keep blacks uneducated who conned courts into forcing schools into social promotions and to remove disipline. Now we have top heavy school systems with too many administrators and not enough teachers and when budgets get tight teachers are the first to go, sometimes while still adding unneeded adminstrators.
