Congressman Paul Ryan and others in the GOP crowd say they've come up with a way to get the country's budget back on track. Their democrat rivals contend Ryan's plan sacrifices too many vital programs and will hurt the country.

Many of them believe raising taxes is the only way to secure programs like Medicare. East Texans talk back on which plan fits best: raising taxes or making cuts.

Higher taxes, not neccesarily. But a much less complicated tax code that offers a flat tax and one not used to pay favors. Foremost, government must be cut. I'd bet you could cut it at least in half and never effect the services it offers.

I believe that if government's role were limited to protecting our lives, rights and property, then America would prosper and thrive as never before. Then the federal government could concentrate on protecting our Constitutional rights and defending us from foreign attack. A federal government that did only those two things, could do them better and at a small fraction of the cost.

Cut the corporate welfare or tax cuts and tax loopholes for corporations, billionaires and millionaires and the likes who are not hiring American workers and those who do hire but are not paying workers enough to keep them off of the welfare rolls. Then cut the size of the budget. Corporations, billionaires and millionaires should be taxed on all of their income at the same % that I am 21%.

HOW ABOUT CUTTING BACK THE GOVERNMENT THEY AREN'T WORKING FOR "THE PEOPLE " ANYWAY

CUT GOVERNMENT SPEND!!! Our government is out of control & way too large! Do they think money grows on trees?

How about no more unfunded wars?

Great point, tonks. The "warfare" state is just as damaging to our economy as the "welfare" state. Problem is that the right holds onto warfare just as tightly as the left holds onto welfare.

We do need a strong national defense but we should not be the international police.

If a regular person ran their budget like the government then we would all be living on the streets. Life is not free and I am tired of paying for it.
