Fort Worth mulls-over the idea but decides to table it for council meeting this week

A suggestion was made last month to help save the City of Fort Worth money by not hiring smokers.

Supporters said it would help cut healthcare costs. City spokesman Jason Lamers says city staff will not suggest the council discuss it at Tuesday's meeting after reviewing all suggestions from employees.

East Texans talk-back on the idea of not hiring applicants because they smoke.

Texas may be a right to work state Dino, but they are not exempt from following the Federal Laws that are in place to protect workers from employers who think they are above the law.

obesity also drives the cost of health care up more than tobacco products.

Our Republican Legislature has twice imposed higher taxes on tobacco products to cover tobacco related medical cost so why should tobacco users pay higher premiums for health insurance when they are already paying for that coverage when they buy tobacco products. FOR THE FIRST TIME I WILL TOTALY AGREE WITH ROLLINSON. Do we put a hight & weight scale at every register and add a sin tax on food products of over weight people? After all obesity kills more than tobacco.

Dino - what are you talking about? Certainly not the topic at hand.
Rollinson, do you REALLY BELIEVE that second hand smoke causes cancer?
I do not object to smokers being hired, but I do object when the smokers are given a, SMOKE BREAK.
Keep the work place free of smoke, and what people do elswhere is not the companies business, unless, of couse criminal activities are involved.

Texas is a right to work state you can be hired or fired for any reason. You dont have to work there.

After surviving two cancers that the doctor said was caused by second-hand smoke; I avoid smokers entirely! Having said that, the idea of not hiring smokers is one step too far because the next step will be the overweight, those with high blood pressure, those with any number of health issues until only the medically perfect can be hired. And how perfect is that when even athletes die unexpectedly?
