Is it divisive to ask anyone to support candidate based on race, gender or religion?

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith wants african-americans to unite behind President Obama. In the video; Smith says African-Americans need to show the president "we have his back."

Smith's appearance in the video begs the question: is it divisive to ask anyone to support you based on race, gender or religion?

Robert_B, have you forgotten that this is the land of the free? That includes freedom of speech and opinion. Are you a redneck or just a buffoon? Please hurry off to become a citizen in Russia or China. They like people like you, imagine they can restrict what people say. Check the Middle East at the moment, and see what price ordinary citizens are prepared to pay for the priveledges that we already have. Maybe you are a secret communist! Yes, I believe that it it.

What about a group called "Whites for Mitt"? There would be an immediate outrage and rightly so. This is so obviously racist and divisive. But Obama himself created the the site back in 2007 with the media is still hiding its head.
