Tax revenue keeps towns lining up to turn wet

As Gilmer, Kilgore and Marshall voters consider expanding alcohol sales in their towns Saturday, they join a long line of communities that have gone wet.

In 2003, the Texas Legislature changed the rules of alcohol elections in order to make it easier to get proposals on the ballot.

Since then, more than 650 communities in the state have voted on whether to expand alcohol sales, with more than 500 — almost 80 percent — approving the measures.

In East Texas, there have been 67 alcohol elections with more than 40 passing, which is below the statewide average.
