TCU nurtures 2 mascot horned frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Spirit squads at some colleges and
universities haul their lions and tigers and bears around the
football field.
At TCU, home of college football's No. 5-ranked Horned Frogs,
they may soon have much smaller critters to show off.
The school awaits state permits for it to keep two
state-protected horned frogs, both of which are now infants.
The Daily Skiff, TCU's student newspaper, reports that the Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department issues the educational display permit only
to educational institutions and only if the display is used to
educate about the species and concerns over its diminishing
numbers.
Red harvester ants, the reptiles' favored food source, have
become scarcer in recent years with the influx of imported fire
ants.
