AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican Gov. Rick Perry gets a pounding the podium at tea party rallies, and he rails against Washington. But while tea party activists say Perry is preferable to Democrat Bill White, they are not too focused on his race. Many are concentrating on down-ballot contests.
After 10 years as governor, Perry is no outsider. Some tea partiers say they don't like the toll road network he pushed or his order to have girls vaccinated against the HPV virus. Tea party activist Don Zimmerman says tea party support for Perry isn't real strong, but he says opposition to White is intense.
Perry dismisses any criticism as differences within a family. He says he is supportive of tea partiers and that his views come closer to theirs than his opponents' do.
