A South Texas man who lives on a private wildlife preserve shot and killed an endangered black bear that wandered on to the land, apparently trying to find water.

J. Whittenburg the Fifth said Thursday he thinks it's "unbelievable" how many animals are roaming as they try to find food and water during the drought.

Whittenburg and his two dogs weren't hurt during Wednesday's encounter near Mountain Home, in Kerr County.

Whittenburg says he felt threatened by the bear that was apparently heading for a pond.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says the 2-year-old animal weighed about 100 pounds and may have traveled 150 miles from Mexico.

The black bear is an endangered species. State wildlife officials say game wardens took custody of the animal and are doing a routine investigation.

Black bear are endangered, black bear are vegetarians, and could not present any possible threat to any other game, or humans. The shooter, J-doofus-dement-kapoop the V, deserves severe punishment for this absolute blatant violation of federal law.
