Texas congressman: Principal should have been armed for self-defense

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert said the deadly Connecticut school shooting could have been halted sooner if staff at the school had been equipped with guns.
"I wish to God (the principal) had had an M4 in her office, locked up, so when she heard gunfire she pulls it out ... and takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids," the Republican from Texas said on "Fox News Sunday."
The gun control debate has been renewed since 20 students and six adults were killed Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Many lawmakers and politicians have called for the renewal of the federal assault weapons ban, a piece of legislation that expired in 2004 at the end of its 10-year term but has yet to be renewed.
Gohmert argued that as the country takes on a conversation about gun rights, people must be "open-minded." He said emotional reactions will naturally lead to a desire to "get rid of all guns," but he said that "you (should) use your head and look at the facts."
"Every mass killing of more than three people in recent history has been in a place where guns were prohibited, except for one," he said, arguing for looser gun laws so more people can be armed for self-protection. "They know no one will be armed."
Gohmert made headlines in July when he made similar remarks, saying more deaths could have been prevented in the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooting if someone could have fired back at the gunman.
Asked why people need guns in places such as schools, malls and movie theaters, Gohmert said, "For the reason George Washington said, 'A free people should be an armed people.' "
The Second Amendment, he said, "ensures against the tyranny of the government if they know the biggest army is the American people."

So, you unlock your gun and go out to shot the shooter - but you miss, or just can't bring yourself to shoot a human being - will this help or will this just make matters worse?
Regardless of arming teachers, I think lawmakers just shouting out for a new assualt weapons ban is ridiculous. The last ban was from 1994-2004 and in 1999 the Columbine shooting occured. If someone wants to do evil, they will break any law in the way. This shooter already broke several laws by stealing the guns and bringing them into a "Gun-Free Zone". Those laws didn't stop him, why would people actually think adding another law would make a difference?

In 1927 an nut got three bombs and killed over 40 people here in the U.S. at a SCHOOL. In the 80s a nut with gasoline burned down a disco in NYC and killed over 80 (he blocked the exit doors first.) Hundreds of years ago insane people tended to burn down buildings and houses. So it is nothing new. The nuts will find away UNLESS WE INSTITUTIONALIZE THEM. See that is the real problem. We let them go around all the time.

We should recall Louie from Washington and appoint him to head-up a Constitutional committee here in the new Republic of Texas. Why should Texans fear for their right to bear arms when the socialist states use every negative action of the insane as an excuse to rob us of our rights. The socialist would rather tax Texans to pay Union retirements then institutionalize the insane away from the general population. We ignore lunatics all over our town, Texans deserve a better life than that.

Louie Gohmert is an idiot and has also supported cuts to education (ie....security $) and the elimination of the educators, firemen's and police officers pensions as ALEC and the Texas Public Policy foundation has recomended to Republican legislators. You Republicans expect public servents to risk their lives to protect you and your children for nothing.
Gohmert is nuts. Could one of his tea-party supporters or fellow Aggies please let him that this is real life and not an episode of Bonanza ? Gohmert would be better off spending his time discussing mental health facilities instead of making straw man arguments regarding gun control
This is not about firearms the truth is our mental health failures. We need a national solution that can address the mental health component. Connecticut already has some of the strickest guns laws and it didn't prevent this senseless massacre.
When a person decides to kill in this way, they will find a way to do so no matter what gun laws are in effect.

I very rarely agree with anything Louie Gohmert has to say, most of the time he sounds like a fruitcake to me.
But this time I feel he is 100% right on about this subject. What happened to these children is the result of people not being able to protect them selfs and not being able to protect the children they are supposed to be protecting.
Law enforcement can only react to these things, not keep them from happening. We need more people armed in public places to stop these wackjobs.
Its a foolish and dangerous notion. The fact is that even trained police officers often get it wrong or hit innocent bystanders. School teachers with guns would do much worse. The internet tale about Israelis allegedly arming teachers is not true. People like Gohmert are the problem with their silly rants that even the most sensible control of guns and ammo amount to confiscation. When will we finally replace this fool?
When we secede we'll put you first in line on a bus to Washington DC. Texas will be the better and you'll be happy amongst your kind.
Louie is spot-on in suggesting that educators should be armed. The Israelis have been doing just that for years. If a criminal knows ahead of time that a school is not a "soft target", they will think twice before attempting to shoot one up.
...and every word from this man is beneath contempt...he would have every single American armed to the teeth...he would see shoot-outs between neighbors...he would condone the killing of an innocent Black teen sitting in the back seat of a car at a gas station in Florida, just listening to music...this lousy rep would rather blast someone in the head rather than champion more help for those who are mentally ill...his is the most hideous tyranny of all...a Christian, a patriot? Not in my book!
