LEAGUE CITY, TX - Police in League City, Texas are searching for the hit-and-run driver who left an apology note after striking and killing a man.

Maurice Jones, 34, was walking home from his shift at McDonald's sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday. when a driver on the other side of the road lost control and killed Jones instantly.

His body was found Sunday morning less than a mile and a half away from his home.

Investigators found the apology note a couple feet near his body.

Jones' mother, Roberta Jones, said the note read "I'm sorry," and "I have a family."

"I think it's a coward," said Roberta Jones. "You should admit what you did wrong because eventually it will catch up with you."

League City police said the note is a strong piece of evidence.

"We believe the suspect is a female between the ages of 25 and 40," said Detective Scott Aldridge with League City Police. "The handwriting appears to be that of a female."

Aldridge said that in his 15 years with the police department, he has never seen anyone leave a note at the scene of a hit-and-run accident.

"We believe this person is very remorseful and dealing with a lot of grief," said Aldridge.

Maurice Jones is survived by an 11-year old daughter.

"I want whoever did this to Maurice just to turn themselves in so I can have some type of closure because I know my son isn't coming home," said Roberta Jones.

Things happen. I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose. She doesn't need to go to prison, which is exactly why she did what she did. If she had stayed on the scene and called police. It would be a manslaughter charge with possible jail time. Forget all that, she just left. Nothing changes the fact that this guy is dead, and nothing will bring him back. So what does it matter if they lock him or her up?

I am sorry for your lost, leaving a note isn't good enough. I have heard and seen a lot of this on T.V., Newspaper of hit and runs this year. It even happened to a family member of mine not to long ago. Something really needs to be done to those who do hit and run, jail or prison or some sort of penalty. It's not fair to the ones who loses someone special and nothing is to be done.

I often walk on the streets here in Longview to get around.

That could have easily been me.

Cities like Longview and this League City (I've never been there) seriously need to have sidewalks along every street within the city limits.

I think the city is partially responsible for this man's death. They take our taxes and spend that repaving roads that are not in poor condition while these streets lack sidewalks.

Had Mr. Jones been able to walk home along a sidewalk, he would likely have been out of harm's way.

The story says: "when a driver on the other side of the road lost control and killed Jones instantly."

A sidewalk would not have saved him if the car came off the road.
