AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican lawmakers representing Texas in Congress say they will fight attempts by the Environmental Protection Agency to enforce tougher rules.
U.S. Representatives Joe Barton and John Carter accused the EPA of being too tough on Texas following a meeting with state leaders.
They said recent steps by the agency to reduce the state's regulatory powers are a clear case of federal overreach. They vowed to introduce legislation to stop the EPA from enforcing stricter pollution rules.
The EPA and the Obama administration have repeatedly said that Texas is not properly enforcing federal law. When the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said it would not act on EPA instructions, the agency took away the state's power to grant pollution permits.
The dispute began when President Barack Obama took office.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued warnings last summer to all citizens of Texas NOT to consume anything that comes out of the Trinity River due to toxic chemicals.
So why did they not do something about those dumping the toxic material in the river? It is no wonder to me why Texas has the highest child cancer rate in the nation and in the top 5 for the highest cancer rate per capita.
If TCEQ had done it's JOB we wouldn't have this problem. I don't know if you've noticed but the air quality here is terrible--and it's causing more cases of cancer, and making more kids have autism!
I'm with the EPA on this one.
How rediculous EiceBleu. You stand against CO2 one day and the next you welcome biomass power generation. You cite mercury as a cause for autism, but provide no medical evidence. Your science is consistantly weak and your Texas citizenship is even weaker. The EPA is a rogue government agency which has caused more harm to the business of the United States than any terrorist group ever has. With high gasoline prices the EPA curtails Texas refineries over global warming CO2, as rediculous as you.
Furthermore, air crosses borders, it makes every bit of sense that it's everybody's business. The EPA was given what little power it has by the Clean Air and Water Acts, which are BOTH legitimately passed and reviewed by the Supreme Court. Your argument that the EPA is somehow a terrorist organization doesn't have a leg to stand on, and in this state the EPA has hardly done any regulation beyond telling us to regulate ourselves (TCEQ) which we didn't do!
I wasn't aware I was being watched for scientific citations. I welcome biomass power generation because it recycles the same carbon (taking it out of the atmo before putting it back) instead of using fossil carbon that was put down 350 million years ago, and does it without adding mercury to the air. How you do not know that mercury causes autism I have no idea. It's not new science. EVERY doctor knows about it--and the first thing my daughter's doc tested her for when she stopped talking.
