(KETK) - Tyler Tx — Once a year the community of Tyler comes together for a weekend long celebration of the Tyler rose and the history of the city. Tyler is the rose capitol of the America and people travel from all over the country to take part in the activities.
"With this being our 80th anniversary we're doing it up," said the Rose Festival's 2013 President Randy Grooms.
Each part of the weekend is put together very carefully.
"From the parade, to the queens tea, to the coronation," Grooms said.
The first of the festivities began Thursday with a kick-off ceremony and a ribbon cutting by the Rose Queen, Rachel Clyde.
"It's a great thing in this community," Clyde said. "It's awesome this tradition has lasted this long."
Clyde said she was asked to be the Rose Queen around Thanksgiving of last year.
"This has been a really long time coming and it's really very strange that it's actually here," Clyde said. "But I'm really excited for it, it's surreal that it's all kind of happening now."
And this festival would not be able to take place without the devotion and care of the people within the community.
"We're all blessed to live in Tyler, it's such a great city to live in, a beautiful part of the state, said Ken Waits. "And we have such wonderful people here, it's an opportunity to give back."
