August 27, 2009 - 11:16am

VERNON - A 13-year-old football player is dead after practicing in triple-digit heat.

After practice Wednesday, the North Texas eighth-grader went home and told his parents he wasn't feeling well.

This morning he was found dead in his bed.

Toxicology reports are pending to see if the death was heat-related.

Temperatures in Vernon reached 105 degrees Wednesday.

Agian we hear the same story year after year of a family loosing a child due to our Texas heat. Why is it that we here in Texas put our sons and daughters at risk? How many deaths of our sons and daughters do we have to loose and suffer the loss of until we realize that the heat is deadly and we should not be practicing in such extreme conditions! My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends for there loss of there son.

I feel really horrible for this family, however every time we watch the news all I see is negative articles about football. I have a 7th grader who just began playing football this year for the first time and was really excitied about it. He also is watching these new clips and is now questioning playing the game due to all the media saying how the sport is bad for kids. Is there any way that you at KETK could put something positive on the news about football? I am sure any coach would love to tell you how football fosters lifelong friendships, and how you have to work as a team player which most children may never learn. It also boosts self esteem.

Again, I feel terrrible for this family's loss. I just am seeing how the media can really affect our children. Teenagers are listening to everything you decide to put on the news, sometimes positive articles could work wonders.
Thank You for time. Melanie Soto

I don't think that anyone is putting down the game!!
It's the hours of practice in the extreme heat!!!!
Now you tell me who's to blame?????
Who makes them work out that long in that kind of heat?????

I am the father of Brent Mcghee. You tell your son to go out and play football with all of his heart. My son had that choice and thats what he did. My son even had an epilepsy disorder so we are not for sure yet what has caused him to go to heaven. so tell your son to give all of his heart to football and dont be scared because of the lies the media puts out.
