Texas Toll Roads

March 27, 2009 - 6:28pm

TYLER-You might have already paid for the roads with your taxes, but now one lawmaker wants to make sure you don't pay for it again in tolls.

Toll roads in Texas have become a huge debate in the past year or so. The new bill, which was passed by the state Senate Thursday, would make sure roadways like Loop 323 will never be able to be turned into a toll road.

State Senator Robert Nichols said in a press release that his bill will reassure many drivers that the roads they drive on toll free today, will be toll free tomorrow.

In current law, a road can be converted into a toll road if approved by local voters even though many roads have regional and statewide use.

Nichols says it's unfair to make a driver pay for a road that has already been paid for using taxpayer dollars.

But there is one catch to the new bill, new lanes added to existing highways may still be tolled.

I moved away from Tyler just before the first part of loop 49 was opened up. The first time I came back and drove on loop 49 I could not help but to laugh out loud. What a joke, first I have never seen an asphalt paved toll road before. much less a two lane one at that! a few nice hot summers and that road will look and ride like every other country road in that area. I lived in tyler for 25 years and always heard of this new great Loop 49 that would benefit us all when completed. Wrong!but it makes a great bike path for us cyclists!

It is a shame to see that the government continues go grow and our pay continues to fall. Lets start seeing some forms of government lose there jobs. We cannot keep taking food off tables of hard working families for these loser politicians that continue to lie, cheat and steal from the people for there own greed. When this government bubble bust from this disfunctional government, Toll roads, all this money so that a few peple can benifit. Fire all city, county and state employees then find some good people who care about the well being of the people who pay the taxes. I know all employees are not bad but, We need to weed out the criminals within our government. Then when found guilty, stone them to death in the road. Government corruption is the worst crime in american history.
