Texas wildfires blaze in 'difficult' conditions

HOUSTON — Texas firefighters are struggling to contain massive wildfires in dry, windy conditions that slow progress. Texas Forest Service fire analyst Brad Smith calls conditions "difficult."
He says while 10 mph to 15 mph winds blowing through the state are better than Sunday's 35 mph gusts, they're still unfavorable for firefighting.
Smith says new fire potential also is high. That forecast is one notch lower than the "very high" potential Sunday, when winds from Tropical Storm Lee converged with gusts from a northern cold front. He says the wind combined with high temperatures and dry conditions to create the greatest wildfire danger.
Now conditions are slightly better, with winds in the single digits in places. Still, fire behavior analyst Roddy Baumann says conditions are on the cusp between OK and nasty.
