The busiest time of the year for animal shelters

Tyler, Texas — Most people would assume that holidays would be the busiest time of the year for animal shelters. However, it is really the day after the holiday in this case.
July 5th is known for being a very popular day at animal shelters and for animal safety hotline numbers as well. Many pet owners find that their dogs get scared during firework shows and run away.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, we spoke with Deborah Dobbs, President of the SPCA of East Texas, who told KETK how to care for your pets to make sure they don't run away.
She said that many pet owners would think their pets enjoy going to the park, family outings, or the lake on the Fourth of July, however, the loud and unexpected sound of fireworks actually scare pets and cause them to flee.
Dobbs said that it is best to make sure your pet is either on a leash or tied up to a post to make sure they are safe and secure if you do decide to bring them along.
Dobbs also told KETK that if you leave your pet at home, you should leave them in their crate with a toy and some sort of background noise on in the house. She said that dogs learn that their crate is a safe place and they will feel more comfortable with the unusual sounds outside until you get home.
The SPCA of East Texas has a hotline for pet owners who find that their pets have escaped either from the lake, park, or even their home after an event such as Fourth of July.
Dobbs encourages anyone who ends up in this position to call:
