There are many different kinds of Santas.
We’ve seen silly Santas.
And bad ones.
But whatever kind you like, there are lots of people getting in on the Santa business. And business is good.
There are probably thousands of professional Santas.
So, there’s is a Santa in every size, shape and variety you like.
There’s even a pecking order.
That’s right, there’s a hierarchy of quality in Santaville.
“Some are real beard like myself. Some are designer beards, and then there’s guys, uncle walter in a Walmart suit with a stick on cotton beard,” says Tom Sorrells a Tyler Insurance agent, who used to look like this.
But over the years, his Santa work has become a real mission.
“It comes from the heart. I like the kids, the kids like me,” he says.
And a business.
And now, he’s in demand.
“I’ve been selected to come to a large mall on Staten Island,” Tom told us, “and that’s where I am currently. I’m even getting calls now daily, 3 or 4 times a day saying, can you come be my santa on the 8th? And I say no, I’m already booked.”
And then there’s the question.
“They’ll say, I want a Red Ryder Daisy BB gun,” he laughs. “And you’ve got to come back with, ‘you’ll shoot your eye out kid,’ just because, that’s what they expect to hear.”
