Pine Tree High School Leadership and Interact Club, in partnership with the City of Longview and Go West Longview will come together to clean up Birdie Park and the neighborhood surrounding the park on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The community cleanup is scheduled from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., and after the service projects in the neighborhood, all are invited to a free community meal and entertainment from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. at Birdie Park.

The PTHS leadership students created the name, “Project SAIL,” which is an acronym, and stands for Serve, Assist, Initiate, and Lead. They plan to serve the community by picking up any unwanted trash that the people need picked up, along with cleaning up yards and house painting.

"We've been planning this cleanup for about four weeks," senior Ana Solis said, "It's a way to make our community come together and look beautiful."

The project is repeat performance of “Project Renew”, conducted last October, 2013, which was organized mainly by the City of Longview. This year, however, Pine Tree High School students are taking the lead on designing, promoting and leading the project.

According to Police Area Representative (PAR) Officer James Bray, “Working together with the residents and the students in this type of project, we believe we can help build a stronger and more sustainable community. We invite volunteers from the neighborhood or throughout Longview to come help.”

In the future, PTHS Leadership students discussed plans to raise money to build more parks and clean up other neighborhoods.

“The plan is to start with baby steps and eventually get bigger”, said Solis.
