The Tyler Junior College Distance Education program has been named 2014 Outstanding eLearning Program by the Instructional Technology Council.

From the start of its distance learning program in 1969, Tyler Junior College has been an innovator in distance teaching techniques and technology. Today, the college has 243 certified online faculty teaching more than 500 sections of online and hybrid courses each semester.

"While we use cutting-edge technology to deliver our courses, it is our faculty and their old-fashioned dedication to students that sets TJC apart," said Ken Craver, TJC director of distance education.

Based in Washington, D.C., the ITC is an affiliated council of the American Association of Community Colleges and represents nearly 400 institutions that offer distance education courses to students in the United States, Canada and around the world.

Each year, the organization presents its Awards of Excellence in eLearning, recognizing innovation and diligence in advancing distance education.

Judges included members of the ITC board of directors, past award winners and attendees at ITC’s annual Leadership Academy. The judging panels carefully reviewed each nomination, the accompanying website or online course materials, and held each of the winners to the high standards and best practices exemplified by previous ITC award winners.

The ITC’s mission is to provide exceptional leadership and professional development in higher education to its network of eLearning practitioners by advocating, collaborating, researching, and sharing exemplary, innovative practices and potential in educational technologies. ITC tracks federal legislation affecting distance learning, conducts annual professional development meetings, supports research, and provides a forum for members to share expertise and materials.
