The Board of Trustees of the Marshall Independent School District unanimously approved a resolution to establish a Marshall ISD Police Department during the board's regular May meeting held Monday evening in the Pat Smith-Gasperson Board Room.

The feasibility and benefits of creating MISD's own police department were originally studied and presented to the Board last fall, during its November meeting. With Monday's approval of a resolution to create the police department, MISD will now begin the process of hiring a district police chief as well as determing the overall size of the police department in terms of additional officers heading into the 2014-2015 school year.

"Having our own police department will further improve the safety of our students, staff and stakeholders on MISD property and at MISD events," said Ted Huffhines, MISD Executive Director of Operations. "This will also allow us to better control security costs for MISD."

According to the resolution, the Board, by creating the Marshall ISD Police Department, "approves the employment of security personnel and the commissioning of peace officers to maintain law and order within the Marshall Independent School District, establishes as the jurisdiction of the police officers the geographic boundaries of the Marshall Independent School District, and grants the authority to its administration to complete all necessary documentation to effect the same."

In the past, MISD has contracted with the Marshall Police Department to provide security on campus and during campus events.

By creating its own police department within the district, MISD is expecting to not only save money but also will have more control of the schedules and responsibilities of its own police force, Huffhines said.

The district will first hire a police chief to oversee the department, and will create district policy regarding the police department.

MISD is expected to have the police department up and running by the time students report back to school in August.
