Tyler — The Tyler ISD Foundation announced Thursday the establishment of the Frances Cowan Gibson Tyler ISD Fine Arts Endowment to benefit under-funded and innovative art projects throughout the Tyler Independent School District.
The gift to the Tyler ISD Foundation from the Frances Cowan Gibson Charitable Lead Trust will total more than $580,000. The endowment was created through a partnership between the Tyler ISD Foundation and the East Texas Communities Foundation and will provide annual grants to the Tyler ISD fine arts department. The endowment was announced during a presentation at the Tyler ISD board of trustees meeting Thursday evening. TISD Foundation Executive Director Maya Bethany and Director Marc Loredo presented TISD Director of Fine Arts George Faber, Superintendent Gary Mooring and the board of trustees with a $12,000 check, the first grant from the endowment.
Mrs. Francis Cowan Gibson passed away in April 2012. Her family stated they would like their “mother’s love of music, education and the city of Tyler to serve as an example while inspiring others to contribute.”
In recognizing the importance of the sizeable gift from her charitable lead trust, Maya Bethany, Executive Director of the Tyler ISD Foundation said, “This very generous gift from Mrs. Frances Cowan Gibson will help to reach our community’s children through the valuable teaching methods of the arts. We do not see support for art programs as extra-curricular but enhancement to the core curriculum. The opportunities our children will have because of this contribution will allow their creativity to blossom in music, visual arts or the performing arts. We are honored she chose to support the Tyler ISD Foundation.”
George Faber, Director of Fine Arts for the Tyler ISD said,” The funds that Frances Cowan Gibson donated to the TISD Fine Arts will be used for our elementary strings programs, Fine Arts STEAM Professional Development, to help purchase software for our Innovative Music programs on both high school campuses. We will use this to help as many students and teachers to have experiences in the arts as we possibly can. “
The Tyler ISD Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that provides funds to support innovative Tyler ISD classroom projects and programs that have not been funded or are under-funded by the district’s operating budget. The TISD Foundation also recognizes academic excellence in teaching and student achievement. No tax dollars are used in fulfilling the mission of the Tyler ISD Foundation.
