CNN — A Georgia third-grader is recovering from what her family calls an extreme case of bullying.
Schoolmates allegedly pulled the child's hair so hard over a two-week period, they eventually ripped off a part of her scalp.
Aolani's family is speaking out to protect her and other children who are bullied.
They say one of the boys who started this attack was given an in-school suspension, that's it.
Grandmother Dorris Bearden says Aolani wanted longer hair, so she bought her extensions.
"She steps in the door of that school and the first thing they do is attack her and start ripping her hair out," said Bearden
The grandmother says she was shaken to her core when she first saw the injury.
"When I saw just the horror of it, I just started to cry, and I cried as I unbraided her hair and the hair fell out in my hands," said Bearden.
Beardern says doctor's told her that the little girl may never grow hair on that part of her head again.
She had to shave her head to avoid any further infection.
That's why Aolani's mother and aunt and even strangers shaved their heads to help make a wig.
"it's not only a temporary effect, this is something that could scar for life," said Bearden.
