The secret ingredients to winning first place in the 21st annual East Texas Oilmen’s Chili Cook-off were hard work and dedication.

Robert Petrash, managing coordinator for the BP America office in Hallsville, said his team started cooking at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in preparation for the cook-off in downtown Kilgore. The early morning wake up paid off as BP America took first place at the event for the second consecutive year.

“It’s for a good cause,” Petrash said. “It’s all for the fun and fellowship, and the icing on the cake is taking first place. Everybody at the office looks forward to this because there are so many different companies out here, and everybody that comes out here is so friendly and it’s such a friendly, atmosphere.”

More than 100 teams composed of workers involved with oil and gas service companies were represented in this year’s competition, with proceeds benefiting the East Texas Treatment Center in Kilgore. The center offers such services as physical and language therapy.
