With goose, dove, quail and deer season right around the corner it is especially important to be prepared for hunting season.

Not only should you make sure your hunting license is up to date, but even more important, you should make sure to clean out your gun. When you are cleaning you want to be really thorough and clean out every part of the gun.

"For the most part you just have to keep all the places that have moving parts good and clean and lubricated," said Chris Dorsey, owner of City Rose Flying Clays, in Tyler. "For the barrel I like to use a snake that cleans the inside of it."

He says if you do not clean your gun before you go out hunting there can be serious consequences.

"It might just be that your shot ends up in a misfire," Dorsey said. "But when you're hunting, every shot counts."

Actually you should have cleaned the gun BEFORE you picked it up from last season (or the last time you shot it.)

And it would not have hurt if you went out and practiced some between seasons to.

One needs to be familiar with their guns. The more you are the better the shot you will be in the field (and a safer one to.)
