TISD Audit in the Works...
Killing not addressed...
The Texas School Safety Center was given the task of finding out what went wrong at John Tyler High School in late September when teacher Todd Henry was killed.
But ironically, that incident was not a part of the safety issues they addressed…
The School Safety Center was chosen over a private safety firm to analyze the district’s problems.
Those problems were made most apparent with the stabbing death of a teacher last month.
KETK has obtained a list of the services the center provides for the district. a couple of things stood out.
The safety audit was conducted not by independent examiners, but teams that include district employees.
"We had the district staff involved,” says Billy Jacobs of the Center. “They know the campus better than anyone else. We had a lead auditor from our office."
The report will be written under the supervision of the center, but partially by the district itself…
Jacobs said, "With a combined team of district employees and the Texas School Safety Center individuals from the district had to write up certain parts of the audit information. We'll put everything together."
But most glaringly…the murder of Todd Henry, and any procedures that might need changing in light of it, aren’t even a part of the audit…
"We have not looked at the specific incident that occurred at John Tyler,” he told us. “That is not our focus. Our focus is overall district wide safety.”
So we asked who will be analyzing the murder of Todd Henry to correct any problem?
"What specifically happened in that incident,” Jacobs said, “that's something that the district has to review."
And does the safety center have any immediate opinion on district safety in the wake of the events at John Tyler?
“The district is doing great, overall,” Jacobs remarked.
That’s right…Jacobs told us that any examination of procedures that sent a violent, emotionally disturbed young man into John Tyler High School straight out of state incarceration for felony assault, will be handled by the district itself.
He also said there will be a public parent meeting on Thursday…
