HENDERSON - A Rusk County couple appeared in a Rusk County court this morning, accused of bludgeoning a 13-month-old girl to death with a hammer.
According to the arrest report, 18-year-old Jessica Carson admitted to Texas Ranger Kenny Ray she was present when her fiance, 18-year-old Blaine Milam allegedly performed an exorcism on her baby.
Carson said they thought the baby, Amora Bain Carson, had demons living inside her.
The baby also had more than a dozen bite marks on her body.
Rusk County Sheriff's Investigator Lieutenant Reynold Humber says sheriff's officials believe the exorcism is a cover-up and the baby died earlier Tuesday morning. The 9-1-1 call came in shortly after 11 a.m.
In the report, Carson says after the baby was dead, she and Milam drove to a pawn shop to sell the tools. They say they were trying to get money for a priest to perform exorcism services on the baby.
Investigators say it was the most gruesome scene involving a child they had ever seen.
The child was described by family members as a happy toddler.
Rusk County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Bob Richardson set bond at $2 million for both suspects on capital murder charges. If convicted, they could face the death penalty.
