After tornadoes ripped through parts of North Texas and Oklahoma City this week a lot of folks have been thinking about getting a storm shelter.

Investing in an underground tornado shelter can provide security for many.

KETK visited East Texas businesses today, they say they're getting tons of calls from people ordering shelters.

"Our phone has been ringing since 6 o'clock this morning, just an amazing amount of calls after the tragedy in Oklahoma," says Larry Smith, Owner of Maverick Mobile Homes.

Larry Smith of Maverick Mobile Homes and Tornado Shelters in Tyler has been filling orders all morning.

"We have concrete shelters, we do fiber glass shelters, and we also have a steal product," says Larry Smith, Owner of Maverick Mobile Homes.

We're told people who have a tornado shelter have a 98% survival rate.

"That was very proven in Moore, people who were underground most likely saved,"  says Larry Smith.

Calls are also blowing through the roof at 'Big Texas Containers and Shelters' in Tyler, they're offering shelter and installs throughout the state of Texas and even special orders nationwide.

"With this devastating tornado in Oklahoma you know it really puts things in perspective and people really think about what's important," says Jason Umbower.

These shelters can make it through a EF5 tornado.

"This was done by Texas Tech University, and there's a big what looks like a large cannon and they shot 2 by 4 at one of these units multiple times, three impacts, the door the side and the back to make sure it would survive impact," says Jason Umbower.

Shelters can hold up to six-15 people and has built in vents. It's also smart if you have a storm shelter to keep supplies in box, water, food, batteries and flashlights. It's important to plan ahead and think about shelter to survive 100 to 200 mile per hour winds.
