Traffic crept along Loop 287 Tuesday morning after an 18-wheeler hauling frozen chicken overturned, blocking the entire northbound side.

The accident happened at 1:22 a.m., when Thomas Hanley, of Sheridan, Ark., lost control of his southbound truck on the rain slick highway just south of the Loop 287 overpass at Denman Avenue, according to a Lufkin Police report. The truck and trailer then jackknifed, and the trailer flipped over the concrete divider before coming to rest in the northbound lanes. Hanley reported minor injuries but refused hospital transport by Lufkin Fire EMS workers.

Police cited Hanley for failure to control speed, the report stated. The accident shut down the entire stretch of highway until 8 a.m. Tuesday. As of the lunch hour, the cleanup continued with the southbound lane flowing freely. Northbound drivers were using the shoulder to squeeze past the accident as Lufkin Police officers on scene directed traffic.
