Trucks boost Sept. auto sales in US
..DETROIT (AP) — SEPTEMBER AUTO SALES: U.S. auto sales rose 10 percent in September. Trucks and SUVs outsold cars by a wide margin, despite buyers' worries about the economy.
WHAT HAPPENED: The truck fleet is getting older, and many small businesses need to replace work vehicles. Automakers offered good deals to clear out 2011 trucks. And car sales are still struggling because of shortages following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
WHAT'S NEXT: The pace of sales in September was the fastest since April. Automakers hope sales will stay stronger through the end of the year as Japanese inventories keep improving.
