Two people were found dead Saturday afternoon after a building, housing apartments, went up in flames.

It happened just after midnight Saturday morning in the 110 block of East Oak Avenue in downtown Palestine.

Palestine Police dispatch received a report of a fire at that location. Palestine Fire Department were called to the scene. Upon arrival, fire fighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions in the back of the building.

Within minutes of being on scene, the structure had multiple collapses.A defensive strategy was used to protect exposures and fire personnel on scene.

Unfortunately, the building was a total loss, but the fire was contained to that building and the surrounding structures only sustained minimal damage from heat exposure.

Two firefighters suffered from heat related injuries and received treatment at the scene.

Fire crews tell us that four people were inside the building at the time of the fire, two of which were able to make it out.

Crews found the body of the missing two while cleaning up debris. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending further investigation.

The State Fire Marshal has been contacted to assist in the investigation.

There have been several streets closed until the area has been reevaluated for safety. Those streets are: East Oak from Avenue A to Sycamore and Houston from Avenue A to Crawford Street.
