Smith County (KETK) — Two people are in the hospital following a late night shooting Sunday just north of Troup. Smith County Sheriff's investigators confirm with KETK News the shooting happened just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening outside a house off of County Road 2343.
"I was sitting on the porch.. and all of a sudden I seen about twenty loads of cars going down the road then later on they started shooting and everything," said Benny Martin. He has lived here for four years and said he's never seen anything like this before. "Yeah its a pretty nice neighborhood, kids come down and play and stuff like that, sit around and BBQ and let the kids eat free, and all at once theres been this gang-banging s*** coming down here," said Martin.
Smith County officials say it was a family gathering in Tyler that turned into a domestic dispute, which quickly escalated into a shooting in Troup. Smith County dispatchers received a call saying multiple shots were fired. When deputies arrived on scene in the 19000 block of CR 2343, two men were injured. The 38-year-old, and 48-year-old were shot in the legs. They were taken by EMS to a Tyler hospital where they are being treated, and are expected to be ok. These two men are Martin's nephew and brother-in-law. He said, "I was worried and kind of hurt because of my nephew." He told KETK he hopes this doesn't happen again, and said, "you just have to pray.. Just pray and leave people alone."
While the investigation is still ongoing, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said, "there is a potential for more people to be arrested, but right now at this point, there is just one we're looking at." No arrests have been made at this time.
