TYLER - Tragedy strikes on a southeast Texas high school field Friday when a quarterback dies on the sideline. Now, parents and coaches are raising concerns about how best to protect their students on the field.

Experts say cases where a student tragically and unexpectedly dies are rare but, not uncommon.

Friday, Reggie Garrett, the quarterback of West Orange-Stark High School died after throwing a touchdown pass in the second quarter of the game. Paramedics say the teen had a seizure which they believe may have taken his life. Athletic directors say physicals are done regularly to look for sign of a problem in students but, one east texas parent points out another issue. One mother says the medical history in her family almost kept her child from playing.

Maybe it's just the reporting, but most of these type deaths seem to be African-American and all males in this age group and related to a congenital heart condition. Conditions that don't seem to show up until some unfortunate student dies from it. Maybe more indepth heart screening of these young atheletes can prevent more deaths.

Deaths may be rare, but injuries are not, and they're on the rise. Really makes you question the prudence of spending education dollars on expensive, dangerous, and ultimately unnecessary team sports; when the school districts are struggling to pay teachers a decent wage.
