The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is once again reminding motorists to prepare to change their driving habits as another round of sleet and snow are forecast for East Texas. Crews are prepared and on standby to respond but TxDOT wants motorists to also be ready should the roadways be affected.

According to TxDOT, last week’s storm created problematic travels for motorists who chose to drive after rain, sleet and snow pummeled the area. Motorists are reminded to slow down and drive to conditions should inclement weather develop.

“At this point we are monitoring weather reports as well as the roadways and TxDOT is ready to respond,” said TxDOT spokesperson Kathi White. “We’re hopeful that should this second storm occur, drivers will stay off the roads as much as possible. Elevated structures are not the only areas that freeze, it can happen on any part of the roadway – flat areas, curves, hills. So you really have to be cautious when driving.”

White said because bridges and overpasses tend to freeze more quickly crews will treat them first but all roadways are at risk.

TxDOT again reminds motorists of the following safety tips when driving during icy conditions:

  • · Reduce speed
  • · Increase following distance
  • · Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses
  • · Stay back at least 200 feet from vehicles treating or clearing roadways
  • · If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes and steer in to direction of skid
  • · Avoid unnecessary travel
