TxDOT to close BU 59 for construction project, drivers asked to use alternative routes
Lufkin, Texas (KETK) — After this Friday's morning rush hour, motorists traveling north on Business 59 in Lufkin will have to use alternate routes for the U.S. 59 trips.
The Texas Department of Transportation said its contractor will close the BU 59 northbound bridge at Loop 287 to traffic for work on the ongoing construction project.
According to TXDOT officials, all northbound BU 59 traffic will be required to exit eastbound on Loop 287. Detour signage will direct U.S. 59 North traffic to the SH 103 U-turn just a half mile esat on Loop 287.
Motorists can then continue onto U.S. Highway 69 North.
TxDOT says the bridge closure is necessary for the contractor to form and pour a large bridge cap on one of the columns for the new U.S. 59 northbound mainlane connector bridge.
The cap forms will not allow for two lanes of traffic to safely maneuver through the work zone. The detour will remain in place for about two weeks until the cap work is completed.
Work on this $52 million project is expected to completed in the Fall of 2015.
Mororists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time or using alternate routes to reach their U.S. 59 northbound destineations.
Please use caution when traveling through this and all work zones. Traffic fines will double when workers are present.
