The Tyler Azalea and Spring Flower Trail kicks off Friday, but Mother Nature doesn't seem to be quite syncing up with this year's ribbon cutting.
The blooms are behind from what organizers expected, and may be a little "fashionably late" this year.
"People always ask us, 'When are they gonna be in bloom? When are they gonna be the most beautiful?' ... And we just can't guess," said Kim Morris with the Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The date was moved up from last year as organizers tried to plan it around peak blooming time, since East Texas' winter was so mild.
But the up and down temperatures may have thrown the flowers off, Morris said.
"Last time we talked, we were really concerned about an early bloom," she said.
If you drive around the Azalea District, there are plenty of flowers that have already made their debut, but that "magic moment" that brings people from all over to see, has not made it yet.
Morris says as of Monday, the blooms are probably at between 20 and 40 percent.
But even if the Brick Streets aren't smothered in their yearly treat of pinks and reds for opening day, the show must go on.
"We know there will eventually be a beautiful show of azaleas, we're just not sure it will actually be Friday at 10 a.m. or not," Morris said. ..."There really hasn't been any concern other than us wanting a pretty picture at the ribbon cutting. I think that's the highest level of concern there really is. Everyone knows they are going to bloom, it's just kind of a question of when. We are kind of on God's watch for that.:
The Azalea and Spring Flower Trail kicks of March 15 and runs through April 7.
