TYLER - Jason Wright is a District 6 city councilman in Tyler. Making a campaign promise a reality, he's holding periodic town hall meetings with Tyler citizens. Saturday night, the first of Wright's town hall meetings kicked off in a local hotel conference room.
"I don't want to wait until there's some burning issue that we all need to kind of react to, instead I want to make sure that our citizens are better aware of what we do at the city, what's going on and most importantly, I want to know the concerns that they have," Wright said.
Among the items discussed at Saturday's meeting - the budget, code enforcement, and something that many in the meeting were passionate about - Tyler traffic congestion.
Many were complaining about the heavy traffic on South Broadway and the loop - and they don't understand why medians were put in.
"I was concerned that since this is a number one concern, why are we building medians on the loop, since this is one of the causes of traffic congestion?" said Tyler resident, Larry Meckley
Councilman Wright says TX-Dot was responsible for the medians, and according to the City of Tyler, statistics show that traffic fatalities have gone down since the medians were put into place.
Wright also says roads like the extension to Grande and the upcoming Loop 49 are meant to relieve some of Tyler's traffic congestion.
