Tyler credit union beefing up security after robbery

Telco Plus Credit Union in Tyler was robbed on Wednesday a little after 5 in the afternoon.

"Had a woman come in...she looked in and left and then she returned with a knife.  And told her employees to give her all the money," said President/CEO Betty Deweese.

And it's not the first time -- KETK covered a story as far back as 2006 when the credit union was hit.

Deweese says they are moving to south Tyler later this year.

But in the meantime, they're hoping to beef up security.

"We're going to see how we can have more employees here during the hours that we're open.  See if there is anything else that we can do in scheduling to make it safer for our members and our staff.  We're going to look at adding some more cameras," Deweese said.

When the bank robber walked through the doors complete with a mask and a knife, employees did exactly as the robber instructed them to do...just like their training taught them.

"Our main concern was to give them whatever they want and get them out of here soon as possible," said employee Melvenia Thompson.

Thompson was not working during the robbery, but she has been present for a bank robbery before...she says it's not a good feeling.

"It's very happened so fast you're really unaware what really is happening until after the fact," Thompson said.

Tyler Police are still looking for the woman who they describe as a light-skinned black female, wearing a black ski mask, possibly driving a black Chevy Malibu and wearing a t-shirt pretty heavy on detail.

"Again, we're hoping somebody might recognize this shirt...because it's kind of an odd shirt, the design that's on the front.  They may say, you know I know someone that has that type of shirt...or drives this type of vehicle so...that's what we're looking for," said Don Martin with Tyler Police.

We're told the employees in the video that were working during the robbery were of course, pretty shaken they have been given a few days off.

And if you happen to know who the woman is in the surveilance footage, contact Tyler police.

Beefing up security isn't that difficult. Cameras won't do anything--they clearly have decent cameras as-is and it did nothing to thwart the robber. For crying out loud, hire off-duty police officers to sit in the lobby at all times. Problem solved!
