The Dog Scouts of America were founded in 1995, but it was not until this year that the troop came to Tyler. Thanks to local Tyler resident, Natalie Fletcher, your canine companion can now enroll in the city's first Dog Scouts Troop, Troop 225.

Troop leader Fletcher tells KETK, "We accept all dogs, even dogs with problems. We're trying to educate ourselves, our dogs, and other people, so the community benefits."

This Dog Scouts Troop not only gives your dog a chance to socialize, it also gives the owner a chance to learn proper techniques for training your dog. Fletcher explains, "The number one reason dogs end up in shelters is because of behavior problems. We'll help strategize, so you're not alone with a dog you can't handle."

Just like the Boy Scouts these dogs will earn merit badges for their very own dog scouts bandana. There is over ninety badges to be earned for activities such as hiking, swimming and even citizenship.

If you are worried that your dog might not socialize well with others, there is a bandana system to ease your worries. If your dog does not get along well with humans, your dog can wear a rainbow bandana. While on the other hand, if your dog does not socialize well with other canines, your pet can wear a yellow bandana. This bandana system will keep the pet and owner safe.

The Tyler troop is not only focused on badges and training, it also helps the community. The Dog Scouts Troop is raising money for animal causes such as The Humane Society through future events and fundraisers.

If you are interested in getting your dog involved in the Dog Scouts, the group is holding introductory meetings for further explanation of the troop and future activities.
