A popular New York restaurant began receiving complaints there service time was too long. Having eliminated menu items and increased their staff, they felt there was another cause to the problem.

They hired a third party team to investigate. Their findings showed the service time had almost doubled the amount of waiting time for guests from ten years prior, only it wasn’t the restaurant’s fault. Guests were too busy with their cell phones and not paying attention to their server.

Restaurants in Tyler have been experiencing the same problems. Guests were sending back cold food or having iced-down drinks because they were busy taking pictures of their food or texting and didn’t even notice it had been brought to the table. At Cork’s, the waiters give an extensive knowledge to guests of their wine collection. An experience being completely passed over for cell phones.

Cork Food and Drink decided to do something about it. Comparing the findings of the New York restaurant to situations they had been encountering, they decided to create “The Cork’s Challenge”.

The Cork’s Challenge offers guests a 10 percent discount if they can successfully get through their meal without being on their phone. Bar staff say so far it’s going great and they would encourage other restaurants or guests to try it.
