Since 1997 Texas Monthly Magazine has compiled a "Top Fifty Barbecue Joints" list. Stanley's Famous Pit has made the cut in 2003, 2008, and now in 2013.  Although, this past year, the competition to make the cut was a lot stiffer than years in the past.

Stanley's owner, Nick Pencis explains "They've really been tearing it apart this year they're going really shake it up a lot of people who have made it on the list in the past probably won't make it this year. They said there's going be a lot of new folks."

For the past eight months a team of fifteen barbecue experts traveled over 33,000 miles and visited over 600 barbecue joints to test the best, all when restaurant owners least expected it.

Pencis says, "They don't tell you when they're coming they don't want you to treat anybody special or find a way to make it better for anyone who is coming and trying you out."

Pencis went onto explain that there is no prior warning so that the team of judges cannot get preferential treatment.

They graduated into chopped-beef sandwiches and owners have changed, but still popular
