Tyler State Park rings in the new year with annual hike
Tyler, TX (KETK) — Looking for a fresh start on January 1, 2014? Well, the Tyler State Park's department decided to help out by organizing its annual New Years Day hike.
KETK spoke with Boyd Sander's, the Park Interpreter, who said, "The whole first day hike thing started a couple years ago in Texas State Parks. It's just a way to get out and get that resolution started in a healthy way, and get them into nature". Instead of hitting the gym, hiking outdoors has many health benefits. Sander's said, "Getting outdoors is good for folks, but getting them off of pavement out in the woods has several health benefits from lower blood pressure to helping kids with ADHD".
This year 60 people joined the festivities, which is more than double last year's turnout. After this 2 mile hike the group seemed energized, and most agreed it was a great way to spend time with the family.
Throughout 2014 there will be 40 other hikes in which you can participate. For a full list of upcoming events, visit: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/calendar/
