The University Interscholastic League has announced the newest cutoff numbers for 2014-2016 district reclassification.

The new numbers for realignment are as follows:

  • 6A: 2,100 and above
  • 5A: 1,060 to 2,099
  • 4A: 465 to 1,059 (Division I, 686-1,059; Division II, 465-685)
  • 3A: 220 to 464 (Division I, 315-464; Division II, 220-314)
  • 2A: 105-219 (Division I, 158-219; Division II, 105-157)
  • 1A (formerly six-man): 104.9 and below (Division I, 55-104.9; Division II, 54 and below)

The new numbers will have a significant impact on teams currently in the 3A classification and below. According to the UIL, in previous years, the UIL conference cutoff numbers were not available until the realignment was released in early February. In an effort to increase transparency and awareness of the reclassification process these numbers are being released in advance of the final alignments.

KETK spoke with a representative with the UIL who said the exact numbers for enrollment will not be released until realignment is officially announced in February.

Class 4A, which will possibly see the biggest change, will likely have the following East Texas district; Athens, Atlanta, Brownsboro, Bullard, Carthage, Center, Chapel Hill, Diboll, Gilmer, Gladewater, Henderson, Huntingon Jasper, Kilgore, Liberty-Eylau, Palestine, Pittsburg, Pleasant Grove, Rusk, Spring Hill, Tatum and Van.

According to enrollment numbers submitted by coaches earlier in the year, Robert E. Lee in Tyler put up the largest numbers in East Texas with a high school population of 2,547, which would include them in the all-new 6A bracket. Gary ISD, a district who doesn't play football posted the smallest enrollment numbers which would move them up to 1A along with Apple Springs, Leverett’s Chapel and Mount Enterprise.

Schools likely to join in on the 5A race include; Lufkin, John Tyler, Longview, Texas High, Corsicana, Nacogdoches, Mount Pleasant, Jacksonville, Whitehouse, Marshall, Hallsville, Pine Tree and Sulphur Springs.

Jumping from 2A to 3A chatter will possibly be the following; Mineola, Mount Vernon, Eustace, White Oak, Winnsboro, Elkhart, Malakoff, Jefferson, Daingerfield, Harmony, Hughes Springs, Newton, Hooks, Queen City, Arp, Paul Pewitt, Palestine Westwood, Quitman, Edgewood , Troup, New Diana, Waskom, Garrison, DeKalb, Alba-Golden and Linden Kildare.

2A realignment will more than likely include: Hawkins, Ore City, Harleton, Beckville, Alto, Cayuga, Carlisle, James Bowie, Joaquin, Shelbyville, San Augustine, Overton, Big Sandy, Timpson, Evadale, Detroit and Tenaha.

The 2014-16 alignments will be released on February 3, for football and basketball. District alignments for other activities will be released in the order of their seasons. More information about UIL alignments can be found at http://www.uiltexas.org/alignments.
