We all know the construction business uses a lot of illegal labor. But a new survey now shows us how pervasive the practice actually is.

We’ve all seen it. Go to any construction site. If the boombox is on, you can bet it’s not playing rock, rap or country.

And now we have numbers to go with that picture. The problem of 11-million undocumented workers in the US is one of the big items on the plate of congress and the administration.

And now, we see how one industry is dependent on them. A new survey by the University of Texas shows the extent to which the undocumented have become part of the construction industry.

There are 5.7 million construction jobs in the US. 600,000 in Texas. Of those Texas jobs, 400,000 are filled by the undocumented.

“If it was 10,000 workers or 20,000 workers, you could sort of absorb that. But when it’s 400,000 workers who aren’t paying income taxes, have no workman’s comp, and aren’t getting overtime, it’s terrible,” says Stan Marek of Marek Companies, a construction conglomerate.

They make on average $3.12 less an hour than a US born workers. 73% of them get no safety training versus only 40% of the US born. And only 29% are covered by Workers Compensation if they get hurt.

“And that’s an exposure where we’re all affected,” says Gilbert Urbina of the Hispanic Center of Tyler. “Because this way, they are not paying taxes, and are able to receive some benefits. But if they are employees, then they’re able to contribute more back into the community.”

“Now it’s not because those workers want to work like that,” marek says. “It’s because it’s the only thing available to them. Our system is broken.”

You must not be very old Mr Smith because when I was a kid and even a teenager people hired the kid next door, their neighbor, Americans, heck the Mexicans that were here did not even know how to speak Spanish, they learned it along with the rest of us in grade school for a very short time. Americans have worked their butts off too, only now they can't get the opportunity to work because of illegals and Un-American people and contractors hiring them. Start putting Americans first.

Illegals taking Texas jobs, scamming a system, paying no tax, taking less/hour. Feds want to build fences and fly spy drones, none of which works, all that taxpayers pay for. If we enforced penalties against hiring illegals they would leave, we would get our schools, hospitals and roads back. Tell Feds to F-off with minimun wage and income tax. No forced purchase of health insurance. While illegals get safety training, Texans are forced into diversity classes. Seceede from the socialist.

That's because illegals are all contractors will hire, they will not pay the extra money to hire Americans who are trained, licensed, and are professionals at what they do. Don't let them fool you, they get better treatment in hospitals than Americans do. Now you know why there are so many unemployed people in this country, because of UN-American low life's hiring illegals so they can underbid companies that do employ Americans. It shows in the quality of homes built since the 70's also, cheap.

Who says, who goes? And yes that is a hard question I don't have an answer to but I do know we can't take them all and we can't keep allowing more and more to come. South American countries already make it a crime to sneak in (and they get a few years in jail for being in the country Illegally.) We need to start thinking of taking that action while determining just who can stay, and who must go.

BUT, liberal policies of welfare were instituted (the Great Society of LBJ) and as soon as the illegals crossed the border they could get free housing, food, education, etc... This made the problem worse and soon some (but not all) illegals took the welfare route. This can be seen in California where their whole welfare system is broke (as in ran out of money.)

What to do? If all made citizens then the welfare system will collapse (but then Obamacare is going to collapse anyway.)

Long time ago when I was a kid my brother-in-law used an illegal to help build fences. Leo was his name. The practice was common so building fences on the farm could be done cheaply. But over time the practice just became so widely used that more and more illegals came fulfill that niche. Unfortunately many of them stayed for years and years, sending money back to South America and enticing others to come. And that is why were are in this fix.

Most of the illegals worked their tails off.
