Monday, July 22, 2013 - 7:09pm

East Texans say, it was a pretty good hay season,  and it's almost time for hay producers compete to see how their hay stacks up with other hay makers.

East Texas State Fair will be open in September 23, and it's the 29th Annual Smith County Hay Show and Auction which will be held at the Harvey Hall Convention Center in Tyler.

Hay producers are getting ready to see what their hay quality is and it's all for a good cause.

More than 100 samples of hay are usually entered for the event.

"The top 25 placing hay samples will then be auctioned," says Chad Gulley, Extention Agent, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension of Smith County.

The Hay Show committee, local organizations, hay producers, and East Texans come together to support youth and agriculture.

"The money is used for the scholarships and the youth in Smith County," says Gulley.

Scholarships supporting soil conservation programs, the East Texas State Fair Junior Livestock show, Cattle-Ettes scholarship fund and other Smith County agricultural projects.

Hay producers can enter their hay on August 15th and 16th at local feed stores.

"The customer brings in one or two samples or some of them has brought in a half of dozen samples and it's three dollars per entry per bale," says Al Horaney of Al H. Horaney's, Inc.

The fee also covers the lab analysis. The samples will then be picked up for hay judging on August 20th.

"They judge it for quality and protein level," says Horaney.

On the day of the show, hay show results will be announced and the hay will be sold during the 'Howdy Neighbor' barbeque.
