GRAND ISLE, LA — UPDATE (11:46am): According to a news release from Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, work was being done on the platform which caused the explosion and fire Friday morning around 9:15 am. The rig is a production facility.

The fire is out and there is no oil believed to be leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.

There were 28 people on the rig. 8 people were involved in the incident, two are reported dead, two missing, and four were airlifted to West Jeff Medical Center.

Plaquemines Port Authority was immediately notified by the Coast Guard and are on stand-by in Venice to support the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is on the scene with multiple boats and aircrafts. Three commercial vessels are also on scene.

ES&H clean-up has been dispatched to handle any possible pollution. They have set up their command center in Houma.

UPDATE (11:14am): NBC news now tells KETK, the two fatalities can not be confirmed at this time. They are receiving conflicting reports at the moment.

However, the U.S. Coast Guard now says that there were a total of 28 people on the rig at the time of the explosion around 9:15am.

The rig is near Grand Isle, La.

They are not sure if there is a leak associated with the explosion.

Authorities say that the fire has been extinguished.

This incident comes one day after the Justice Department announced that BP oil company will plead guilty to manslaughter charges stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The London-based oil giant has agreed to pay $4.5 billion in government penalties.

UPDATE (10:37am): NBC news confirms that two people have died, two others are still missing, and four have been flown to West Jefferson Medical Center.

ORIGINAL STORY: According to the US Coast Guard – an oil gas platform owned by Black Elk Energy exploded and caught fire around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16.

The rig is located about 20 miles southeast of Grand Isle.

We’re told 4 people were taken off the rig.

The search is continuing for 2 more workers, who may have gone overboard. Several units of the Coast Guard are on their way to the scene.
