A spokesperson for Carrier tells KETK, the bargaining process with the sheet metal workers union has come to an end.

The workers have agreed to accept severance packages. The details of the packages were not immediately available.

Carrier representatives say the closure will directly affect about 500 employees. No word on how many might be transferred to other Carrier plants.

The Tyler plant will continue operation through 2013.

Carrier has a scholarship program to help employees pay for tuition and book fees, which will still be available to employees of the Tyler facility for up to 4 years.

When we last spoke to Carrier, a spokesperson said that the Tyler plant operations might shift to Monterrey, Mexico. Thursday morning, however, Carrier said the move to Mexico is not definite.

On Friday, Carrier announced to employees a proposal to close their Tyler plant, pending a collective bargaining agreement with the union.

Carrier officials say the plant  will continue operation through at least 2013.

Bargaining could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Employees would receive separation benefits if the plant closes, and would keep scholarships awarded through work. Operations would shift to Monterrey, Mexico.

A total of 500 employees would be affected.

2I have been a Carrier employe for 23 years. There is not a chance to keep the plant open. During negotiations the union president asked about pay cuts to keep the plant open. Their answer was you can work for minimum wage and we will still close the plant and send it to Mexico.
Trust me, we were not getting anywhere near 100% benefits. And the tuition program they mention, we have to pay up front and then get reimbursed. Not too many people can afford college tuition on unemployment.

To remain competitive, moving the plant south is not the answer. Union workers are spoiled and accelerate the process of closing companies. GM retirees get 100% retirement benefits, that's unheard of

Maybe the employees should consider taking a modest pay cut if they keep the plant here.

right at 500 employees
Product lines and production will move to monterrey, mexico

Get the democRATS and odumbo out of office where businesses are not afraid to operate and the economy will take off and the demand for HVAC units will go up where this won't be necessary!!! The democRATS have become the enemy of the working class...!! Remember in November who did it to you!!!

We can keep the plant here if the employees will agree to work for $1 an hour.
I am sure we can get the republicans to lower the minimum wage accordingly.

How many employees do they currently have and did they state where the jobs would go?
