Update: Child dies after shooting himself with mother's service weapon
According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Johnson, the son of a Smith County jailer, shot himself with what they believe is his mother's service weapon after he found it in her personal vehicle outside their home on Fairlawn Road in Tyler.
Johnson's mother drove him to a local hospital herself after the shooting, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The case is being investigated by the Tyler Police Major Crimes Unit. No charges have been filed at this time.
Tyler Police tell KETK that just after noon Sunday officers were dispatched to the scene of an accidental shooting.
Officials say prior to their arrival, 4-year-old Jaylen Johnson was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
