Palestine, TX (KETK) — UPDATE (Wednesday, March 6th, 7:36am): Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization met Monday evening to discuss how they planned to proceed after being denied participating in the upcoming Palestine Dogwood Festival on March 16th.
A member of the group tells KETK, they plan to have their own booth - seperate from those participating in the festival - a couple blocks down from the actual event.
The booth will be in a new plaza, which the group plans to dedicate in April.
ORIGINAL REPORT (Tuesday, March 5th, 5:11pm): The John H. Reagan Camp #2156 Sons of Confederate Veterans organization has been denied the option of renting a booth at the Palestine Dogwood festival, which begins on March 16th.
The Palestine area Chamber of Commerce informed the group of their decision on Monday.
KETK spoke with members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization, who said they were confused by the Chamber's decision not to allow them to participate in the event.
"We are a historical group," one member told KETK. "We've participated in past events without any problem."
KETK reached out to the Palestine Chamber of Commerce for an explanation as to why the group was denied participation.
The Chamber released the following statement on Tuesday:
"The Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce is FOR building a stronger community. Our volunteers spend countless hours doing so. It is not in the community's best interest to allow politically divisive groups to participate in the Dogwood Trails parade or to be a vendor at the Festival. We are charged with the responsibility to operate on behalf of the city of Palestine."
However, members of the veteran group tell KETK, they are not meant to be "politically divisive".
"There is a lot of misconception out there," one member said. "We just want to promote historical accuracy and act as educators in the community."
In the past, the group has worn re-enactment uniforms, honored gravestones of soldiers, and dedicated historical markers, which, they claim, was "all in an effort to honor the ancestors of East Texans who fought for the southern cause in the war between the states."
"Five out of the first nine mayors of Palestine were Confederate veterans," a Reagan Camp member said. "More than a thousand men from Anderson County fought in the Civil War."
The member tells KETK that, while they are still confused by the Chamber's decision, they are not looking for a fight. The group will meet on Tuesday night and make a decision on how to proceed.
"One way or another, we are going to keep on keeping on. We will try to do what our ancestors expected us to do, which is to tell history accurately and honor those who came back from the war. We want to respect those Confederate veterans who helped to build the State of Texas and Anderson County."
The Palestine Dogwood festival kicks off with a parade on March 16th.
The John H. Reagan Camp #2156 Sons of Confederate Veterans organization has many future activities planned, including the dedication of a new plaza in Palestine in April. They tell KETK that this set back with the Chamber is not expected to have a great impact on their group.

I am saddened and hurt that the city of Palestine would allow such a group to setup in their town. I have spent many dollars shopping and eating there, but recently have held on to my dollars.
I am a very proud African American. I know my history and the history of my ancestors well. My ancesters were raped, hung, land stolen( Slocum Massacre 1910), murdered, homes burned all under the sanctions of the Confederate Flag. That flag is a symbol of racial hatred and put fear in the hearts of my ancesters, even into the 60's. Why wash our faces with that flag now and reopen racial hatred and fear?
I have been advertising for the Dogwood Festival where I work in Athens. As a mother of 4, whom I have raised to be proud of their heritage both northern and southern. Denying the right to educate or allow the freedom of speech makes me rethink the decision to participate at all in the Dogwood Trails.
If the Palestine Chamber of Commerce would truly like to bring people together, they should take a lesson from Balch Springs, Texas Mayor Dr. Carrie Gordon who held a Juneteenth celebration in her city this past June 2012 that included a mock civil war battle and Confederate and Union soldiers marching in their parade among other events and activities. She also allowed the SCV to set up an educational booth in the Civic Center. I was there in a CSA uniform and it was great!
I agree a foolish selfish decision same as when people turned their backs on us Vetinam Veterans.I will not spend another dime there till some sensible people get on the Chamber.
The City of Palestine has a record of anti- Southern bias. This is an example of how just a few people in the right place make decisions which create "political correctness." instead of doing their job as an American defending freedom of speech, and presrving the heritage and history of their community. If you would like to learn more about modern day Southern movement, you can purchase Southern Fried Ramblings with Grits and All the Fixins. It's a newly releasaed ebook.
even though times have changed for our great state the memories of those who heard the call and gave their lives for the state of Texas and communities like palestine should not be forgotten..seems more like discrimination then political correctness..
The SCV group in Palestine will have a booth for Dogwood Trails, just a block or two down the street on their own property, which is the site of their new Confederate Veterans Memorial Plaza in downtown Palestine. The plaza will be opened with a parade and dedication ceremony on April 13th. The group wants to work with the city in educating everyone as to the rich heritage we possess. Too much history isn't being told, or when recounted, is done so in the most negative and twisted way possible.
John H. Reagan Camp #2156 Sons of Confederate Veterans, Palestine is a very knowledgeable group of men. They continue to study the history of our country & state & help others to learn more of the true history of the United States, The War of Northern Aggretion, & The State of Texas. These people are trying to correct misrepresentations & untruths about a war fought between families, friends, & some people who just wanted to get their own way. By any means possible. Research, ask, learn.
I am glad the Camp is going to have a chance to showcase itself, but what if it did not have the property nearby to do so? If this is a government or quasi-government sponsored event, the rights of the Camp are being trampled and they should not be allowed to get away with it. I agree, the last thing one would want to do is get in a fight, but the fught was brought by thye Chamber, not the SCV. An inquiry into how lawful this decision is needs to be addressed, not put off with an "oh well."
The SCV bylaws and constitution state that the SCV is a nonpolitical entity.
"The Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce is FOR building a stronger community...."
How exactly are thet FOR a stronger community when they are SO willing to denegrate a local civic and historical group, claiming that political correctness is the reason?
Well then, if the Chamber is acting as a quasi-governmental agency acting on behalf of the City, then the Camp should have a discrimination case! They have NO good reason to deny the Camp the same opportunity it gives others. I know you guys in the Camp don't want a fight, but it's NOT your fault. It is the Chamber's fault...they are asking for it. Stand up for your right to participate. An injunction is the first thing!
I agree 100% with CharlieEL response! The SCV should file a lawsuit against the Chamber of Commerce (CoC) for not allowing the SCV participate in this event. Where is the diversity that the liberal left is always demanding? The Confederate soldier by Congressional action in 1958 was officially recognized by the United States as US Veterans entitled to all the rights and privileges of same!
This should disgust every Southernor proud of their heritage. I know from now on I'll take my business elsewhere. I won't stop for coffee or gas while out on the road in Palestine, Frankston or Buffalo will do fine for me now on.
